Key Takeaways

About Stephen Hui

Stephen started hiking while in late elementary school. Now, he is an author of three hiking guide books, one following the trails of his early inspiration 103 Hikes in Southwestern British Columbia and another with his family and for every family into hiking. Particularly covering the southwestern British Columbia and northern Washington State trails, he brings his experiences from different parts around the Pacific Northwest areas into his hiking guide book.

Theme 1 Hiking: People, Places and Activities

Often surprising people with their ruggedness, BC trails attract people from different parts of the country and in the US.

Inspired by the fourth edition 103 hikes book, Stephen wrote his first book 105 Hikes. Condensing many years of hiking experience, each book took three years of work. Working with hiking groups and people who like to hike within a diverse community of local and international people in the Vancouver area, Stephen himself got life changing inspiration while on his Sunshine Coast hike trail. Hiking helps you connect with people since you get to spend a long time together during the hikes. So, Stephen jokingly says that hiking is as much about connecting with people as it is about getting away from the people.

Theme 2 Hiking: Health and Habitat

Stephen's books often highlight field guides on flora and fauna along the hiking trails. With wildlife pictures more than views, it may come as a surprise to the audience of his books. Stephen enjoys learning about plants, animals and finding patterns that help identify them and their specialities. For instance, some plants can be medicinal or food while others may have severe adverse effects on our body like some poisonous fungi species found in the wild.

Individual hikers have a responsibility towards habitat conservation. Following the 7 Principles of Leave no trace can help in preserving the habitat and the environment we enjoy. Our collective responsibility and the government is to identify and provide necessary funding for trails and parks and environmental conservation.

Theme 3 Hiking: Tales from BC Trails

Inspired by his kid who is ten at the time of his new book release, Stephen highlights how we get to cherish every ditches and have a fresh eye views of the details while hiking with kids in his book Best Hikes and Nature Walks with Kids

On a personal level, taking week long trips, usually 5-10 days of backpacking in small hiking groups, he loves being in the moment during his hikes.

The Sunshine Coast Trail remains inspirational to him for the publication of his first hiking book and reflecting on things that he cares about the most in his life.

Thank you, Stephen! Thanks for inspiring us with your Tales of Trails from British Columbia.
